Position on Bill at 2018
Session of Oregon Legislature:

    SB 1532A:    Support

Dear Committee:

The Oregon Progressive Party supports SB 1532A, which modifies the definition of "motor assisted scooter" to include vehicles with 4 wheels and removes the requirement that the scooter have "handlebars."

We filed testimony with the Senate Business and Transportation Committee, but for some reason it is not posted in OLIS.

Ultimately, the avoidance of catastrophic climate change will depend upon using more efficient means of transportation.  Electric scooters are about 50 times more efficient than conventional cars for moving one person.  Barriers to their adoption should be removed.  Some scooters use 4 wheels to provide greater stability.  There are many makes and models available, as shown by a few pictures below.

Some perfectly good scooters do not have handlebars, such as the Segway Mini products (one pictured below), which are steered by the rider's knees.  Other scooters have steering wheels instead of handlebars.
