Eva Golinger is a leading figure in the Venezuelan revolution. She is editor of a popular Venezuelan English language newspaper, and has her own news program on Venezuelan national television. She is author of the Chavez Code and other books, and is referred to by President Chavez as “Venezuela’s sweetheart”. She is an expert researcher, and will speak about Wikileaks secrets and U.S. foreign policy in Latin America.

Food for Thought begins April 14 with a multi-media discussion about meat production with Bon Appetit CEO Fedele Bauccio, a member of the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production. The lecture will be followed by a hormone-free, antibiotic-free meat tasting.

Friday, April 15, the University of Portland will host a Food Film Festival Saturday, April 16, features four plenary sessions about food production, sustainability, and social justice with a mix of lectures, discussions, and panels. The day concludes with a keynote address by Michael Pollan, author of In Defense of Food, The Omnivore’s Dilemma,The Botany of Desire, and Second Nature. Michael will be introduced by Congressman Earl Blumenauer.

Conference registration for Food for Thought is free, and opens February 1. Tickets for Michael Pollan’s keynote speech are $20 for general admission and $25 for reserved seats; they are free for conference hosts and sponsors, University of Portland faculty and staff, and students of any college or university. Portland Says NO to the JTTF (Joint Terrorism Task Force)

Join other Portlanders to say No to the Portland participation in the Joint Terrorism Task Force. Portland withdrew from the JTTF in 2006 because of concerns that our officiers might be used to spy on Portland citizens as they gather to engage in legal, non-violent protest. We should not rejoin.

On March 10th the Portland City Council will be voting on whether or not the City of Portland should re-enter the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). We strongly oppose the JTTF because we value our civil rights and we need Portland Police officers to be held accountable to Oregon State Law. We don't want roving wiretaps, secret access and domestic spying on non-violent activists & community groups.

We said NO in 2005 and we say NO now.

Rally at 12:30; speakers at 1 PM. Council hearing and vote scheduled for 2 PM. Public testimony will be taken.

This year’s theme has been chosen to spark a conversation about incorporation being a positive attribute. In essence the word means to build bridges and close gaps. To incorporate everyone is the intention. We want to celebrate sustainable business models big and small, organizations gathering momentum in the green movement and anyone who is ready to take steps toward creating a healthy future for our children. Sustainability is an idea that will need incorporation of all parties, coming together and succeeding!

Mission Statement: The Earth Day Celebration is organized by a coalition of organizations and community members celebrating and activating environmental and social sustainability in the Portland, Oregon metro area. We encourage community service projects, citizen participation, emphasis on local economy and the restoration of a culture of cooperation. In our 12th year, we have built this event to highlight local organizations and businesses that demonstrate social and environmental sustainability in their own unique way for Portland area residents. Along with organizations & vendors at the celebration, there will be music, dance, a Kids’ Village, Health and Wellness area, Food, the Reware Upcycle Market and the T-horse.

Tim Kasser : Human Identity and Environmental Challenges, 5 - 7:00 pm, PSU, Shattuck Annex (SW Hall and Broadway)

Despite some important successes, the efforts of the environmental movement have thus far failed to activate the kinds of personal and social changes necessary to meet the many ecological challenges we face. A growing body of psychological research suggests that if these efforts incorporated more knowledge about human identity (including our values, our sense of social identity, and the ways we cope when threatened), greater progress towards a more sustainable (and socially just) world might be forthcoming. This event is free and open to the public.
Tim Kasser is the chair and a professor in the Psychology department at Knox College. His research focuses on materialistic values, investigating how values relate to well-being in various nations around the world, as well as what leads some people to become especially focused on different types of values. 2011 Illahee Lecture Series - Searching for Solutions: Innovation for the Public Good

We all know we are unlikely to solve problems going forward with solutions from the past. We need to think of new approaches. We need to innovate. But what exactly is innovation? When is it useful, trivial, destructive? And how can we tell? What conditions foster or enable innovation? How do innovative ideas move from inspiration to initial implementation to wide-spread diffusion? Furthermore, even with all the good ideas and practices out there, how do we get organizations to embrace innovative solutions at the rapid rate we'll need to avoid hitting environmental and energy walls? Unless otherwise noted, all lectures begin at 7 PM at the First Congregational Church, 1126 SW Park Avenue in Portland.

Feb. 3 — Political scientist Roger Pielke, Jr., will champion the importance of energy innovation as the key to moving past carbon towards a sustainable society.

March 14 — Consultant extraordinaire Alan AtKisson will discuss how governments, businesses and nonprofits can push the accelerator on innovation for sustainability.

March 30 — Molecular biologist Richard Jefferson will talk new tech, tools and thought to bring efficiency and equity to life-sciences-enabled innovation.

The festival committee is pleased to present a variety of feature and documentary films from the African continent. The majority of films were made by African directors. The films celebrate Africa’s achievements, expose Africa’s problems, and reveal the possibilities for a more hopeful future. They show us pictures of Africa through the eyes of Africans, rather than a vision of Africa that is packaged primarily for western viewers. The films represent African concerns that are political, historical, and social. This year covers a wide range of themes and topics, including family and loyalty, parent-child relationships, community responsibility, change, the quest for peace and justice, and the power of wonder, imagination, and imani, the Swahili word for faith.

These films were chosen because they represent different countries and cultures and a range of lifestyles from pre-colonial to modern times, including both rural and urban settings. Although it is impossible to represent a whole continent with only a few films, it is our hope that through this annual film series we will encourage American viewers to become interested in African cultures and to study them further. Evening showings always include after-film audience discussions with the Directors and /or other speakers familiar with the country or subject matter.

I Can Control Myself: The 'Twilight' Saga as as American Mormon Tale of Perfection,

Speaker Susana Morrill’s Twilight saga rests in its story of forbidden love. But it is also a compelling treatise on the belief that people have free will and can change themselves for the better. Perfectionism is a long-standing tradition within American Protestant-dominated culture and in Mormonism, the religions of the saga’s author, Stephanie Meyer. This talk will explore the historical roots of this religious belief in American and Mormon culture and suggest that “Twilight” represents another step in the mainstreaming of Mormon culture.
Susanna Morrill is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Lewis and Clark College. She teaches courses in United States religious history. Morrill’s research focuses on women in United States religions. Her work in the recent past has focused specifically on how early Mormon women used popular literature in order to argue for the theological importance of their roles in the home, community, and church. Cross- Border Unity Against the Korea Free Trade Agreement
A Speaker's tour with the Korean Confederation of Trade Union's Kim Kyung-Ran

In early December, U.S. and Korean trade negotiators struck a deal that is expected to bring the Korea Free Trade Agreement to the floor of Congress in early 2011. This is the biggest free trade agreement since NAFTA, and is strongly opposed by the largest labor federations in each country.

The same provisions in the Korea FTA that encourage the off shoring of U.S. manufacturing jobs — such as special investor privileges, deregulatory requirements and substandard labor protections — also weaken labor’s hand in South Korea. Trade policies that increase corporate power at the expense of jobs, workers’ rights and democracy must be stopped.

Hear from Kim Kyung-Ran, Director of External Relations for the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, as she:

Busts the myth that job-killing trade deals that hurt ordinary Americans somehow benefit working people in other countries; and

Inspires us to action with photos and stories from some of South Korea’s largest and most dramatic mobilizations against the FTA to date

Kim’s stunning 35-minute slide presentation will be followed by short reports from local activists, updating you on the expected impact of the FTA in our region and how you can get involved in local efforts to stop it.

CREATING A CLEAN ENERGY ECONOMY. Our country is in the depths of an economic recession and ecological crisis. We need nine million new jobs in the United States. They must be jobs that can support families and jobs that do no harm to the environment. America needs her best minds generating smart and innovative ideas to create more jobs. Van Jones is one of those people.

As the founder of Green For All, the national organization working to get green jobs to disadvantaged communities, Van was the main advocate for the Green Jobs Act, which George W. Bush signed into law in 2007. The Act was the first piece of federal legislation to codify the term "green jobs." In December 2010, under the direction of U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald the FBI delivered nine new subpoenas in Chicago to anti-war and Palestine solidarity activists. Patrick Fitzgerald’s office is ordering the nine to appear at a Grand Jury in Chicago January 25. In response we are calling for protests on Jan.25 across the country and around the world to show our solidarity. Hundreds of organizations and thousands of people will be protesting at Federal Buildings, FBI offices, and other appropriate places, showing solidarity with the nine newly subpoenaed activists, and with all the activists whose homes were raided by the FBI. Fitzgerald’s expanding web of repression already includes the fourteen subpoenaed when the FBI stormed into homes on September 24th, carting away phones, computers, notebooks, diaries, and children’s artwork. In October, all fourteen activists from Chicago, Minneapolis, and Michigan each decided to not participate in the secret proceedings of Fitzgerald’s Grand Jury. Each signed a letter invoking their Fifth Amendment rights. However, three women from Minneapolis Tracy Molm, Anh Pham, and Sarah Martin are facing re-activated subpoenas. They are standing strong and we are asking you to stand with them-and with newly subpoenaed nine activists-by protesting Patrick Fitzgerald and his use of the Grand Jury and FBI to repress anti-war and international solidarity activists. Climate scientist may have identified global warming as the most important issue of our time, but it has taken over 20 years for the problem to penetrate the public discourse in even the most superficial manner. Most sociological explanations for public “apathy” emphasize lack of information, incorrect mental models or lack of concern. Norgaard analyzes the collective denial and resistance to disturbing information that actually inhibits action.

Worker's Republic

Workers' Republic' is a 60-minute documentary that chronicles one of the most important labor victories in recent memory. Three weeks before Christmas 2008, in the depths of the economic crisis, Chicago company Republic Windows and Doors announced the factory's closure. They informed their work force that they would not be paid for their final week or receive their accrued vacation pay. In a move that harkened back to the sit-down strikes of the 1930s, the workers occupied the doomed factory day and night for nearly a week, declaring they would not leave until they were given what their employer owed them.

The workers won over the public to their cause and the story made headlines all over the world. 'Workers' Republic' conveys the courage, the creativity, and the solidarity of those window-builders who vowed to stand up for their rights. Bull Run Town Hall On Our Water System
What every Portland resident needs to know about our water system

• Cryptosporidium, the supposed reason for this massive rebuilding of our water system, is a red herring. A catastrophic sewage event in Milwaukee, Wisc., the rationale for requiring Cryptosporidium treatment—was caused by raw sewage in the drinking water, not Cryptosporidium.

• No unfiltered water system has had a public health problem from Cryptosporidium. There are and have been no microbial or chemical microbial public health problems from open reservoirs.

• New federal regulations requiring covered reservoirs will actually decrease our water quality by adding toxins and carcinogens such as Radon and ethers. Closed and covered reservoirs have EPA-documented public health problems, such as deaths from microorganisms.

• EPA regulation is flawed and scientifically unsupported because of poor methodologies.

• City of Portland Bull Run Treatment Panel in 2002 found that added treatment will show no measurable public health benefit. In 2004, the independent review panel found no need or public health benefit to eliminate open reservoirs.

• Portland water bills, which have already jumped 34 percent in the last two years, will double in less than five years.

Voter-Owned Elections are a comprehensive system that provides candidates a voluntary option when running for Mayor, City Commissioner, and Auditor without special interest contributions.

A panel of four will address several aspects of campaign finance reform during the first hour, followed by audience questions.

The Columbia River Crossing project is a $2.6 to $3.6 billion proposal to widen I-5, rebuild and replace freeway interchanges and extend light rail between Vancouver and North Portland.

The Columbia River Crossing project in its current form is facing very serious financial and political challenges.
Metro Councilor Robert Liberty believes it is important to begin a community discussion of some alternatives to the current proposal, in the event it is infeasible.

Over the last several months he has solicited suggestions of alternative approaches to the problems which the current CRC is supposed to address. He has asked a panel of experts and community leaders to gather for a group discussion of the merits of these proposals.

The Mending Wall: Immigration and Human Rights in Perspective

What does good immigration policy look like? How do we reconcile the prerogatives of states to control immigration without infringing on the rights of immigrant and refugee communities? Can we establish immigration laws that are in line with international human rights standards and that ensure a people’s continued access to their cultural heritage?

Borrowing its title from Robert Frost’s famous poem which suggested that “good fences make good neighbors,” this panel of interdisciplinary writers and scholars delves into the controversy and complexities related to Arizona’s recent immigration law, SB 1070, including Portland City Council’s subsequent resolution condemning the law as well as the larger historical and international human rights dimensions of the issue.

Moderated by Daniel J. Tichenor (Philip H. Knight Professor of Social Science and Senior Faculty Fellow at the Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics, University of Oregon) who has published extensively on immigration and national identity, and is the author of the forthcoming Faustian Bargains: The Origins and Development of America’s Illegal Immigration Dilemma (University of Michigan Press); Elizabeth Hovde, editorial columnist for The Oregonian; Juliet Stumpf (Associate Professor of Law at Lewis and Clark College) whose research focuses on the intersections between immigration law and constitutional, criminal, national security, civil rights, and employment law; and from the Netherlands, Cas Mudde (currently Nancy Schaenen Scholar at The Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics and visiting associate professor at the department of political science of DePauw University) author of the forthcoming Defending Democracies: Liberal Democracies and the Extremist Challenges of the 21st Century.

Stealing the Light, a documentary film

This inspiring documentary focuses on the story of Mohammad Khan Kharoti and his extraordinary journey to build a school in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. With a deep love of learning Kharoti (an Afghan refugee who now works for Kaiser Permanente in Nuclear Medicine) wanted to pass on to the children of his village the same opportunity he had, to attend school and to learn to read and write. In 2001 he obtained permission from the Taliban to start classes for both boys and girls, started a non-profit organization called Green Village Schools—and eventually grew the school to 1200 students, 400 of them girls, before it was destroyed in 2008. Through interviews in Portland and with Afghans in Helmand Province, the film gives insights into the burden of illiteracy on Afghanistan and the tension of working under the constraints of two parallel governments—asking along the way the important question, “what role can education play in promoting peace in conflict-torn countries?”

A brilliant new reading of the economic crisis--and a plan for dealing with the challenge of its aftermath--by one of our most trenchant and informed experts.

When the nation's economy foundered in 2008, blame was directed almost universally at Wall Street. But Robert B. Reich suggests a different reason for the meltdown, and for a perilous road ahead. He argues that the real problem is structural: it lies in the increasing concentration of income and wealth at the top, and in a middle class that has had to go deeply into debt to maintain a decent standard of living.

Persuasively and straightforwardly, Reich reveals how precarious our situation still is. The last time in American history when wealth was so highly concentrated at the top--indeed, when the top 1 percent of the population was paid 23 percent of the nation's income--was in 1928, just before the Great Depression. Such a disparity leads to ever greater booms followed by ever deeper busts.

Robert B. Reich is professor of public policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. He has served in three national administrations, most recently as secretary of labor under President Bill Clinton, and was an economic advisor to President Obama. His articles have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. He lives in Berkeley.
