OPP Endorses David Schor for Mayor of Portland

The Oregon Progressive Party (OPP) has endorsed David Schor, running for Mayor of Portland in the May 17 primary election.
 
"All the mayoral candidates have acknowledged that affordable housing is a strong need in Portland," said Liz Trojan, a member of the OPP State Council. "Only David has identified a source of funds to deal with the problem – a tax on those who do not currently pay social security tax on their incomes over the annual income cap of $118,500 per person."
 
"We still suffer from the too-big-to-fail bank-induced Great Recession.  David is the only candidate running who speaks continuously to the need for a municipal bank," said OPP Chair David Delk.
 

Jason Kafoury, Secretary of OPP, said, “With David, we get a true progressive who understands that taking on real campaign finance reform and the massive income inequality in our community are the top priorities for our next mayor."

Citizens Allowed to Speak, Only After Joe Walsh Demands It

Dave, Howdy, Joe Walsh, Malcolm Chaddock, and I attended the 2:00pm city council rate hikes meeting at the Portland building yesterday.  Joe said that "if he was not allowed to testify",  then he would get arrested for speaking out. There was a confrontation with Mayor Sam, who relented and activists were allowed to speak after Department presentations were made. When activists were allowed to speak on the issues or water, sewer, and garbage rate hikes, they thanked Mr. Walsh for making a fuss to make testimony possible. Joe did not have to get arrested to make his point. I yelled out during the confrontation,"This is a democracy, not a dictatorship". I feel that, because of this action that Amanda Fritz voted no on the issue and the full rate hikes were not voted in. Check out the KATU Video .

Friends, we are lucky to have Joe Walsh on our side.
 
I saw maybe 30 NO rate hike activists at this meeting. We are on the streets making a difference: Individuals for Justice & Oregon Progressive Party.

Rocky Anderson worked for equal rights, ending the wars, climate justice, and the impeachment of G.W. Bush during his 8 years as the boldly progressive Mayor of Salt Lake City.  Due to corporate corruption of our government, Rocky left the Democratic Party and is running for President of the United States.  He seeks places on state ballots by petitioning as a non-affiliated candidate and by obtaining nominations from non-major political parties.

The Oregon Progressive Party along with many local community groups oppose rejoining the Joint Terrorist Task Force by protesting at Portland City Hall Thursday afternoon.

Dozens of protesters opposed to the city working with FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force rallied outside City Hall early Thursday afternoon before the City Council took up the issue.

Alaina Melville of the Oregon Progressive Party said the group was opposed to the most recent resolution by Mayor Sam Adams, calling it vague and predicting that it would not prevent the task force from spying on law-abiding citizens because of their political or religious beliefs. "It seems to have even few civil rights protections than some of the earlier versions," said Melville, operation director for the independent political party.

Signs carried by some of the protesters accused the FBI of targeting anti-war protesters. The council hearing began at 2 p.m. and was supposed to last about four hours.

On March 10 the Portland City Council will be voting on whether the City of Portland should re-enter the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF).

We strongly oppose Portland joining the JTTF, because we value our civil rights.  We don't want roving wiretaps, secret access and domestic spying on non-violent activists & community groups.

Further, Portland police officers cannot comply with Oregon law (ORS 181.575) and at the same time operate as deputized FBI JTTF agents. The most recent FBI 2008 Guidelines--as well as documented abuses uncovered by the ACLU across the country--show that FBI monitoring of individuals and organizations engaged in lawful First Amendment activity has only increased since 2005, when the City of Portland left the JTTF.

The City of Portland has a shameful history of spying on civic organizations, activists, and concerned citizens.  As written by Ben Jacklet in the Portland Tribune (Sept 12, 2002; updated Oct 30, 2009), the Portland Police engaged in political spying for 3 decades (that we know about): 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

The Secret Watchers:  How the police bureau spied for decades on the people of Portland

[The Portland] police kept watch over a broad range of harmless political and civic organizations. Intelligence officers built files on the People’s Food Store co-op, the Northwest Oregon Voter Registration Project and the Women’s Rights Coalition -- even the Bicycle Repair Collective, a city program offering a $24 course on how to fix flat tires and adjust brakes.

The files obtained by the Tribune focus on organizations, not individual Portlanders. But in the files appear the names of at least 3,000 people from 576 organizations. The names are presented in formal intelligence reports, appear on lists of participants in meetings and groups, are highlighted on posters that advertise events and are underlined in newspaper clippings.

Along with militants and activists are hundreds of regular citizens who were included simply for practicing everyday democracy -- writing letters, signing petitions, joining organizations and attending lectures or school board meetings.

Let's not revert to the Portland Police as political spies.  We said NO in 2005 and we say NO now!

Iraq War Veteran Opposes Portland Joining JTTF

An open letter from an Iraq War Veteran to the People of Portland, Oregon

My friends,

 In the near future, the Portland City Council will make a decision as to whether or not the city should again join the Joint-Terrorism Task Force. This decision could adversely affect the civil liberties of the People of Portland, and may lead to the unlawful surveillance of law-abiding Portlanders in violation of Oregon law and the Bill of Rights. In 2005, Portland withdrew from the JTTF at the behest of its citizens, who had no authority over the shadowy institution that federalizes Portland Police officers and removes their obligation to State law and replaces it with the Department of Justice’s Guidelines on General Crimes, Racketeering Enterprise and Terrorism Enterprise Investigations, which were released 3 year prior to the Portland withdrawal.
